Emerging kitchen design trends

The kitchen isn’t just a place you live in anymore, it’s a living place! It’s all thanks to the immersion of technology into our homes, that’s now so normal, it’s part of the furniture. Technology will continue to change kitchen design for years to come, so it helps to stay on top of the trends. Among those trends includes eco-friendly material choices, minimalist design and more. Keep reading to ensure you’re not left in the dark on what’s trending.

Monochromatic Kitchens for Minimal Design

Looking to achieve that minimalist, sleek aesthetic? Monochromatic kitchens are trending like Kim and Kanye’s baby names, and for good reason. Using one colour is itself minimalist. In particular, white or black colours.

White is an easy way to convey minimalism as it immediately feels clean and simple. Black is a bolder option, especially when it takes up the entirety of the room, so mixing up blacks and whites together can help soften the space and create some warmth.

Simple flashes of colour amongst a white or black background can really enhance the aesthetic of the room. For example: bright yellow splashboards in a monochromatic black kitchen. Or a red bookshelf in an all-white room. Even the bright flash of colour from a hanging painting can do wonders.

Bold Colour Painted Kitchens

While monochromatic colours like white and black are trending, punters are also getting more experimental, painting their kitchens bolder colours, like eggplant purples and vivid greens. In fact, research from Houzz reveals searches for ‘green kitchens’ increased by 50% between 2018-2019.

Bolder colours also bring warmth to a kitchen, such as reds, yellows and apricot, but perhaps most interestingly, they also work as an appetite stimulant. In fact, the colour red stimulates your appetite so much, that it’s often used in restaurant logos, on menus and on tablecloths and napkins. Who knows, painting your kitchen bright red might be the secret to your kids eating their dinner!

Concealed Storage

‘Hide and seek storage’, as it’s sometimes referred to, is having its moment in the sun, and for good reason. Kitchens are inundated with loads of STUFF, from woks and pots, to cutlery, plates and Tupperware. So, it’s no wonder we want to conceal them. Concealed storage goes hand in hand with a minimalist, sparse aesthetic that always looks best clean and uncluttered.

Eco-friendly Material Choices

Homeowners are growing concern for the planet, which is influencing the materials being used in kitchens.

Eco-credentials of kitchen furniture manufacturers, such as a ‘zero carbon footprint’, will greatly impact ethical consumerism in the coming years. Installing 3-in-1 hot water taps, adding dedicated recycling bins to your cupboard or choosing induction hobs to reduce the amount of energy used, are all viable options.

For cabinetry, recycled wood locally sourced is a sustainable option. For splashboards, recycled tiles, and for benchtops, recycled stone are all greener choices, too.

As for cooktops, induction is the greenest and most energy efficient. They save 10% more energy and are also the safest and most advanced.

Integrated Appliances (Minimalism)

Integrated appliances are an increasingly popular option for contemporary kitchens. They had their moment with the older generations, way back when, but just like corduroy pants and sepia-toned photos, they’re experiencing a revival.

They offer ultimate design freedom and the ‘integration’ into kitchen furniture works well to create a sparse sense of minimalism. Integrated appliances are also perfect for smaller, cramped kitchens, proving an effective way to save space.

Integrated Smart Tech

Smart kitchens are expected to be around for the foreseeable future as technology continues to evolve rapidly. Right now, tech solutions like smart refrigerators, which are programmed to sense what kind of foods are stored inside, or voice activated lighting, are already frequenting many family kitchens. It makes you think, pretty soon our homes will be like something out of The Jetsons.

Tech integration is a premium way to give your kitchen not just a sleek and modern feel, but an actual experience.
